IRS Tax Debt FAQ

Straight answers before you hire anyone.

These are the questions people ask us most, before they decide who to trust with their IRS problem. If yours isn't here, ask us on a free call.

Hiring someone to deal with the IRS is a big decision. You’ve probably heard ads that promise to make your tax debt disappear. You may have been burned before. So here are our honest answers.

We don’t promise results. The IRS makes the final call. What we promise is that we’ll check the number, fight for the best result the law allows, and tell you the truth along the way.

Common questions

How much do you charge?

The first hour with Katrina is free. After that, each step of your case has one flat fee, in writing, before the step starts. You'll know the fee for the next step before you hang up. See How It Works.

Why won't you quote one price for the whole case?

Because nobody can honestly price your whole case before reading your IRS records. Anyone who does is guessing. So we price one step at a time, and the price you agree to is the price you pay.

Do you charge a percentage of what I owe?

Never. Our fees are based on the work your case needs, not the size of your bill. A bigger debt doesn't mean a bigger fee.

What if I can't afford to pay you?

We don't offer payment plans for our fees. But each step is priced on its own, so you never pay for everything at once. If money is very tight, a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic may help for free or a small fee. That's a program that helps people with lower incomes. And if you can fix it yourself, we'll tell you how.

Do I need a tax attorney?

Most people don't. You need one if you could face a tax crime, or if your case has to be argued in Tax Court. We can't argue cases there, so we coordinate with an attorney admitted there. See Our Credentials.

Do you work for the IRS?

No. Phillip is federally licensed to represent you before the IRS, but we work for you. Our job is to push back on the IRS for you.

Will I have to talk to the IRS?

Usually not. You sign a form called a Power of Attorney. It lets us deal with the IRS for you. After that, they call us instead of you.

Is what the IRS says I owe always right?

No. The IRS's number is a claim, not a final answer. They may have filed returns for you and guessed high, or added penalties that can come off. That's why we check the number first. See Challenging What You Owe.

Can you stop the IRS from taking my paycheck?

Often, yes. This is called a garnishment, when the IRS takes part of every paycheck. Once we set up the right option, the IRS will often release the garnishment. They make the final call. See how we get it stopped.

The IRS froze my bank account. What now?

Call us right away. The bank holds the money for 21 days before sending it to the IRS. That window matters, and we move fast inside it. See what to do when your account is frozen.

Can you guarantee the IRS will settle for less?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. The IRS makes the final call. Settling for less is called an Offer in Compromise, and most people don't qualify. We'll tell you honestly if you're a real candidate. See Offer in Compromise.

What if I truly can't pay the IRS anything right now?

The IRS may pause collection if paying would leave you unable to cover basic living costs. This is called Currently Not Collectible. The debt doesn't go away, but the 10-year clock to collect keeps running. See Currently Not Collectible.

Can you get penalties removed?

In many cases, yes. Penalties can come off for a clean history, or for a good reason like a serious illness. On an old balance, that can make a real difference. See how penalty relief works.

How long does it take?

It depends on your case. Some fixes take weeks. A settlement offer often takes many months. We'll give you a realistic idea once we've read your IRS records.

I haven't filed in years. Can you help?

Yes. This is one of the most common calls we get. The IRS may have already filed for you and guessed high. We prepare the real returns, which often lowers the balance. See Unfiled Tax Returns.

Do you handle state tax debt too?

Yes, especially with the Arkansas DFA, the state's tax office. Lots of people owe both, and we work both at the same time. If you owe another state, ask us on your free call. See the Arkansas DFA FAQ.

Will this show up on my credit report?

Tax liens haven't appeared on credit reports since 2018. A lien is a legal claim on your property. It can still cause trouble if you try to sell or borrow. See what a lien means for you.

Do I have to meet with you in person?

Almost never. Nearly everything happens by phone, video, and secure upload. If you're local and want to meet face to face, we can arrange it.

What happens on the free call?

You'll talk with Katrina for about an hour. She'll ask what's going on and what worries you most. Then she'll tell you straight what she sees. If we can help, you'll know the fee for the next step. Book your free call.

Picture a few months from now

You open the mail without your stomach dropping.

The IRS calls us, not you. The balance has been fought down to what you actually owe, if anything, and whatever's left has a plan in writing built on your real numbers. And you've stopped carrying this alone. That's what we're working toward, starting with one free conversation.
