IRS CP71 · Yearly Reminder of a Balance Due

Got a CP71? The IRS hasn't forgotten.

A CP71 is a reminder that the IRS says you still have an unpaid balance. It often comes once a year, even if you're on a payment plan or the IRS has paused collection. Some versions need action. Some don't.

What this letter means

A CP71 reminds you that the IRS says you still owe on a tax account. It shows the balance, with interest and penalties added. These reminders often come once a year.

Getting one doesn’t mean something new went wrong. Many people get them while on a payment plan, or while the IRS has paused collection.

How urgent is it?

It depends on your version and your situation.

If you’re on a payment plan in good standing, or the IRS has marked your account as unable to pay, you usually don’t need to act. Just keep filing your returns on time.

If you have no plan in place, take it more seriously. Interest keeps growing. The IRS may file a lien. A lien is a public claim on your property. A large debt can also get your passport blocked. And any future tax refund can be kept to pay the balance.

What we do

We check the amount. Don’t assume the amount is right. A yearly reminder is a good time to look at penalties that could come off.

We check the clock. The IRS usually has 10 years to collect. Some old balances are close to that limit, and that matters for your best next step.

We look for a better fix. If you’ve been paying for years, settling for less or a smaller plan may now fit. If your money is tight, a pause may help. We’ll tell you if nothing needs to change.

Which one do you have?

The versions of the CP71

Look for the letter after the number on your notice. Each version means something a little different.

01

CP71

A reminder of your unpaid balance. It also warns that a large tax debt can block your passport.

02

CP71A

Your account is on hold because the IRS agreed you can't pay right now. If your money situation hasn't changed, you don't need to do anything.

03

CP71C and CP71D

Reminders that a balance is still unpaid, with a passport warning. If you don't pay or set up a plan, the IRS may file a lien. A CP71C can also mention a private collection agency.

04

CP71H

About an old health coverage penalty from before 2019. For this penalty, the IRS can't use a lien or take your property. But they can keep a future refund.

Questions about the CP71

I'm already on a payment plan. Why did I get this?

The IRS sends these reminders even when you're on a plan or your account is on hold. If your plan is in good standing, you usually don't need to do anything. Keep making your payments.

Is the balance on the CP71 right?

Don't assume it is. It includes interest and penalties that keep growing. Some penalties may come off, and some years may have been figured wrong.

Can a private debt collector really be calling about my taxes?

Yes, the IRS does send some accounts to private collection agencies. But your payment always goes to the IRS, never to the collector. And no real collector asks for gift cards. If you're unsure, call us before you pay anyone.

Picture a few months from now

You open the mail without your stomach dropping.

The IRS calls us, not you. The balance has been fought down to what you actually owe, if anything, and whatever's left has a plan in writing built on your real numbers. And you've stopped carrying this alone. That's what we're working toward, starting with one free conversation.
