What this letter means
A CP508C says the IRS has told the U.S. State Department that your tax debt is seriously delinquent. That’s the legal name for a large unpaid tax debt. For 2026, that means more than $66,000, counting penalties and interest.
Once the State Department has that report, they generally won’t issue you a new passport. They can also deny a renewal or take away the passport you have. If you’re overseas, you may get one only for coming home.
How urgent is it?
It depends on your plans. If you don’t travel abroad, it’s not an emergency today. But the debt behind it is large, and other collection steps may be coming.
If you travel, or plan to, act now. Fixing it takes time, and the passport step comes last.
What we do
We check the amount first. Don’t assume the amount is right. If the true balance is under the limit, the report shouldn’t have been made. We push to get it reversed.
We fix the debt behind it. A payment plan you can keep, or an accepted offer to settle for less, can lead to a reversal. So can some appeals and other cases.
We follow it through. After the debt is handled, the IRS has 30 days to tell the State Department. If you have travel coming up soon, we ask for a faster reversal.
